When is the next update? How long does it last or when it is to end, are they all year long, on a regular basis?

There are a lot of things online saying when it will be. I personally think it all year long. Some of the updates are larger than other. I think a big one is around April/May. Or maybe it’s just indexing more. It can also depend on the site that you have, but by reading a lot of the other blogs online, I can see that a lot of people get hit at the same time. I also believe that a lot of the theories about the updates, such as penguin and panda, are old and by the time you hear about them, it’s too late.

I think it’s a way for Google to stay ahead of the game. The theories about algo changes come out way after the fact. The theories that are out there right after then updates/algo changes are just guesses. I don’t think even the few sites that made it through the last updates unscathed surely know why they stayed on top. How would they know? Maybe they were just lucky by being at the right place and at the right time.

This is why google always insists on white-hat seo! They basically telling the folks to do the best they can and provide quality content and we'll do the rest. How difficult is that?

@mikester, that's a lot more difficult than it sounds if you're google. For any set of rules, algos, laws or guidelines, there are always going to be people that will try to get over, as in scam the system, take short cuts, cheat or whatever else to gain an advantage over everyone else. The search engines have to guard against unscrupulous practices to keep the quality and user experience up, so they make the cheats, if successful, short lived between updates.

How do we as website owners trying to implement best seo practices guard against the updates if we're already doing the right things? I didn't buy my backlinks, I'm not connected to a link farm and my content is original and very useful to my visitors, but I somehow still got hammered!

@diamonddave, if it happened to you a while ago and your site is still no where to be found, there are concerns with your site and it needs to be looked at closely and see where you went wrong. If the drop in your ranking is recent, just a couple of weeks or so, then it's still too soon to panic. You could be just getting re-indexed and it will take a bit of time, in the meanwhile others can pass you by on rankings.

@dcdan, thanks, but if the indexing is going on, why are the other sites moving past mine, aren't they also being indexed at the same time? I have noticed many of the newer sites tend to pass me up too.

@diamonddave, that's an easy one to understand. Since not all sites are the same, neither is their content which they're ranking relies on. The newer sites have not been indexed to the extent that the older sites have. If the site had pages at one time, search engines can still see it. By that I mean when a search engine crawls the site, it will record/keep the crawled pages' data/content. Therefore, the older sites have a history that can work for them as well as against them.
